The field guide

Light doesn’t disappear all at once.

Twilight begins before sunrise and returns after sunset. As the Sun moves below the horizon, the sky passes through a sequence of changing light.

Civil twilight

There is still enough natural light for many outdoor activities.

Nautical twilight

The horizon grows harder to distinguish as brighter stars emerge.

Astronomical twilight

The last scattered sunlight fades and the sky grows darker.
